A University of Texas at Arlington computer science team is using a $600,000 National Science Foundation grant to develop algorithms for microservice-based data center services that allow for quicker, more efficient use of data center computing resources.

In addition, the grant will boost curriculum while supporting several doctoral students working on the project and providing research experiences for undergraduate and underrepresented students.

Hong Jiang, chair and Wendell H. Nedderman Endowed Professor of the UTA Computer Science and Engineering Department, is leading the project titled, “SHF: Small: A Distributed Scalable End-to-End Tail Latency SLO Guaranteed Resource Management Framework for Microservices.” Microservices is a type of computer software construction that Jiang compared to building something with Legos.

This popular game gives hackers access to your entire PC

Hackers have been abusing the anti-cheat system in a massively popular game, and you don’t even need to have it installed on your computer to be affected.

The game in question is called Genshin Impact, and according to a new report, hackers are able to utilize the game’s anti-cheat measures in order to disable antivirus programs on the target machine. From there, they’re free to conduct ransomware attacks and take control of the device.

An overview of the Genshin Impact hack.
Trend Micro

Trend Micro prepared a lengthy report about this new hack, describing the way it works in great detail. The attack can be carried out using a Genshin Impact driver called “mhypro2.sys.” As mentioned above, the game doesn’t need to be installed on the targeted device. The module can operate independently and doesn’t need the game in order to run.

Quantum Computing Startup EeroQ Raises $7.25M Shortly After Relocating

Quantum Computing Startup Raises $7.25M Shortly After Relocating

The first laptop and even the first iPhone made significant strides in consumer technology, and it has long been speculated that the mainstream introduction of quantum computers (QCs) will also lead to technological breakthroughs. The one factor hindering the technology is the resources needed to build these computers. Chicago QC startup EeroQhowever, is trying to make the tech more attainable and it recently raised new funding.

Quantum computers are supercomputers, but instead of connecting to the internet or running software, they are used to process large amounts of data from molecular particles. And because of their niche power, QCs are mainly used in scientific fields, but even then are still rare to come across.

In Chicago, EeroQ is working to bring quantum computers to market sooner. The startup raised $7.25 million in seed funding on Wednesday to speed up its hardware production. The latest round was led

NSF award will support project to promote reproducibility in computer science

With the support of a three-year, $900,000 grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF), Adjunct Professor of Computer Science and Engineering Carlos Maltzahn and the UC Santa Cruz Center for Research in Open Source Software (CROSS) will participate in collaborative research to increase the reproducibility of computer science research.

This grant comes from the inaugural year of an NSF initiative, called Findable Accessible Interoperable Reusable (FAIR) Open Science Research Coordination Networks (FAIROS RCN), to create groups of researchers who lead by example to promote open science results and artifacts. Overall, 10 new project groups were funded to pool $12.5 million into creating open source communities, which foster a vibrant exchange of artifacts within a common infrastructure.

“There’s a huge shift going on,” said Maltzahn, director of UCSC CROSS. “I think it has to do with the realization of how much value the industry places on open source, and

ESPN computer predicts North Carolina vs. FAMU football winner

After what was almost the first shock of the 2022 college football season, it appears North Carolina and Florida A&M will play their Week 0 season opener.

That, after a scare when FAMU nearly backed out of the game over academic eligibility issues. Players initially voted not to play after that, but after hearing from the school, changed their mind and set out for Chapel Hill.

Crisis averted, but they’ll do so without seven offensive linemen on the field against the Tar Heels.

What do the experts say about the matchup between UNC and the Rattlers? Let’s look at how the ESPN computer predicted the game.

North Carolina vs. Florida A&M prediction

north-carolina-football (1)

Football Power Index gives the Tar Heels the overwhelming chance of victory, with a 99.6 percent chance to beat the Rattlers at home in the opener.

By contrast, FAMU has just 0.4 percent chance to upset Carolina.

Analysis Cites Prioritizing K-12 Education Funding As Leading Factor

ANNAPOLIS, MD—On Women’s Equality Day, Governor Larry Hogan announced that US News and World Report has named Maryland as the number one state for gender equality. The first-ever analysis of its kind cites K-12 education as a leading factor in achieving the nation’s top ranking.

“Every child in Maryland deserves access to a world-class education, regardless of what neighborhood they happen to grow up in,” said Governor Hogan. “We are proud that Maryland leads the nation in expanding opportunities for women and girls. While there is always more work to do, it is especially gratifying that this study recognizes our commitment to closing the gender gap in the computer science and STEM fields, where we have made great strides. Questions Remain On Computer Fraud Coverage For Phishing

By Robert Callahan and Melissa D’Alelio (August 26, 2022, 6:00 PM EDT) — Businesses are increasing vulnerable to social engineering schemes, also known as email spoofing or phishing schemes.

Phishing schemes involve fraudulent attempts to obtain sensitive information and/or solicit payments from unsuspecting businesses, often using emails appearing identical to a trustworthy source to trick the victim into affirmatively revealing sensitive information or authorizing payment.

A phishing scheme is distinct from hacking, which involves a forceful intrusion of another’s computer system to obtain sensitive information or direct payments without the victim’s assistance.

In recent years, federal and state courts have wrestled over whether computer fraud coverage found in property insurance policies provide coverage for…
